Public transit

In Québec’s major cities, public transit services covering the city centre and suburbs are provided by transit corporations. In outlying areas, services are provided by municipal or inter-municipal organizations.

Montréal is the only city with an underground metro system, with four lines and 68 stations. It covers the city centre and provides links to the north and south shores of the St. Lawrence. In addition, five suburban train lines link the city to the commuter belt.

Tickets costs vary from city to city. Some categories of people, such as children, students and people aged 65 and over, benefit from reduced rates.

School bus services are organized by school boards or individual schools. Eligibility for bus services is determined using criteria such as the walking distance to school, danger zones, etc. In general, the services are provided by private firms.

Some public transit corporations and municipalities offer transportation for the disabled, to promote their social, professional and economic integration.
