Montréal, city of design

The city of Montreal's design initiatives deserve special mention due to the city’s extraordinary development of this discipline, especially in terms of the commercial development of Montreal.

In 1991, Montreal created a design commission, which turned into the Bureau du design in 2006. The commission was behind the creation of the Commerce Design Montréal contest and the Portes Ouvertes Design Montréal. The latter initiative continues to be held, thereby offering the general public an opportunity to discover the sites that have been successfully redesigned and grasp the importance of design in the daily lives of citizens and in offices.

Montreal’s initiatives are now known under the title Montréal UNESCO City of design. Since 2006, Québec’s largest city has been added by UNESCO to its network of creative cities, thanks to Montreal’s initiatives in the field of design. A number of design contests, activities and projects have resulted from this program, which gives rise to a great deal of interaction with foreign initiatives.
