The museum network

The Observatoire de la culture et des communications du Québec includes 420 institutions in Québec, which specifically breaks down into 124 museums, 62 exhibition centres and 234 interpretation sites. These institutions show art, history and science exhibits and are located throughout Québec.

Four large museums play a leading role in this network:

• The Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal
• The Musée de la civilisation
• The Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec
• The Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal

The first 3 are provincial museums whose missions and operations are stipulated in the National Museums Act, while the fourth is a private organization that is also governed by a provincial law. These 4 major museums are recognized around the world.

The wide range of museum services and exhibits that are offered in Québec is clearly illustrated by the 24 themes proposed in the 70 thematic routes displayed on the Web site of the Société des musées québécois (SMQ), the organization that represents Québec institutions and professionals in this field. Its Web site also has a directory of around 300 SMQ member institutions and a calendar of current and upcoming events and exhibits.
