Overview

Professional theatre in Québec began to emerge during the 19th century, but only became a reality in the 1930s, when burlesque shows gave way to popular plays. From puppet theatre to contemporary plays and multimedia shows, Québec offers theatregoers of all ages a wide range of theatrical experiences.

Québec theatre, resolutely modern, has gained increasing recognition around the world. Several Québec authors have seen their work performed abroad, and several of Québec’s 200 professional theatre companies have acquired an international reputation.
