Statutory holidays

The following days are statutory general holidays:

  • 1 January (New Year’s Day);
  • Good Friday or Easter Monday, at the option of the employer;
  • the Monday preceding 25 May (National Patriots’ Day);
  • 1 July (Confederation or Canada, Day), or 2 July where the 1st falls on a Sunday;
  • the first Monday in September (Labour Day);
  • the second Monday in October (Thanksgiving);
  • 25 December (Christmas).

24 June, the National Holiday in Québec, is also a statutory public holiday. However, under the National Holiday Act, the calculation of the indemnity or compensatory holiday is based on different rules than for the other statutory holidays.
