French-language and English-language instruction

French has been the language of instruction in Québec since 1977, when the National Assembly passed the Charter of the French language, requiring children to attend school in French up to the end of their secondary education in public schools or subsidized private schools.

The government, working with the school boards that provide preschool, elementary and secondary education in the public system, has set up various support measures to help students whose knowledge of French is insufficient.
