Social programs

Québec has developed a number of social programs to meet the needs of its population at various stages of life and in difficult times. The government assists citizens in epidemics, road and occupational accidents, disasters, etc.

Labour standards protect the rights of workers and employers, and provide for a minimum retirement income.

Family assistance

The Québec Parental Insurance Plan

Created in 2006, the Québec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) pays financial benefits to all eligible workers who take a maternity leave, parental leave, paternity leave or adoption leave.

Inexpensive childcare services

Day care centres are high-quality child care services that are provided to children of up to 5 years of age for just $7 per day. Preschool (age 5) and elementary (ages 6 to 12) students are also entitled to child care services in schools for $7 per day.

Worker and income assistance

Employment Insurance

This program provides temporary financial assistance to the unemployed in Canada while they look for a new job or improve their skills.

Employment insurance also aids sick workers, pregnant women and family members who take care of newborns or adopted children, as well as people who have to take care of a family member who is gravely ill and near death.

Québec pension plan

The Régie des rentes du Québec (RRQ), Québec’s pension plan, contributes to the financial security of Quebecers by assisting them in their retirement planning.

Old Age Security Pension

The Old Age Security Pension is a monthly payment made to most Canadians aged 65 and older. The payments depend on three criteria: age, legal status and the number of years lived in Canada. Several international agreements have been signed concerning social security.

Income support

It is possible to receive financial assistance when you participate in an employment assistance program.
