Charters of rights
The Québec Charter of human rights and freedoms was passed in 1975. It maintains and protects the rights and freedoms of all persons living in Québec. Some of the rights it enacts may not be contravened by any other Act; these include fundamental rights, political rights, judicial rights and equality rights.
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was passed in 1982. It guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it, subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society.
