Organizations
There are many Québec media arts organizations and events that have gained national and international acclaim. In total, Québec has about twenty artist-run centres that specialize in the field, as well as many renowned festivals and outstanding collectives :
- The Société des arts technologiques (SAT), a real laboratory for experiments of all kinds, is located in the heart of Montreal and features a dome known as the Satosphere, which presents immersive artwork with a 360-degree display.
- Productions Recto-Verso is a multidisciplinary organization in charge of Mois Multi, an international multidisciplinary event.
- The Elektra Festival features creative work, including cutting-edge electronic music and digital artwork.
- The Festival du nouveau cinéma et des nouveaux médias, showcases media arts and new technologies.
- The Kino movement was born in Québec in 1999 and produces short films, especially spontaneous films made as part of the Kino Kabaret.
- Avatar, an artist-run centre that specializes in studio and electronic arts, is located in the Complexe Méduse in Quebec City.
- Oboro, is a Montreal-based artist-run centre that has been active since 1982 and created the New Media Lab in 1995.
- Daïmon, is a production centre located in Gatineau that specializes in photography, video and digital arts.
- Perte de Signal is a production, research and development centre for creative projects in the digital arts.
- La Bande Vidéo, a video and graphic arts research and production centre, offers international residencies and the Vidéastes recherché•es event, which it has put on for the last two decades.
- Productions réalisations indépendantes de Montréal (PRIM), has supported digital, video and media arts since 1981.
- Vidéographe, the first artist-run centre for digital and video arts, was founded in 1971 by a group of filmmakers and producers from the National Film Board.
Major academic resources are also available to support research in the field, particularly from Hexagram CIAM, an interuniversity media arts group of 30 researchers from 3 Montreal universities (Concordia University, Université de Montréal and UQAM).
