Québec’s culture, an expression of its distinctiveness as the only territory in North America where the majority of the population is French speaking, is traveling to stages around the world. Québec may have only 7.7 million inhabitants, but its cultural vitality is clearly unique.
Québec on stage
With 5,000 musicians and 200 composers, Québec has carved out a niche for itself in the global artistic landscape. Many of its performers have attained the highest level of excellence, including Céline Dion, Oscar Peterson and Oliver Jones. But new-generation performers also come to mind: Arcade Fire, Karkwa, Simple Plan, Patrick Watson, Ariane Moffat, The Besnard Lakes and Malajube.
At SXSW 2011, Planet Québec will rock to the beat of The Dears, Radio Radio, Suuns, The Luyas, Karkwa, Random Recipe, Snailhouse and many more!

Québec’s cinema is gaining wide recognition on the international scene. This year, our films have garnered awards in Rotterdam, Venice and Locarno. Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies won Best Canadian Film Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and is a best Foreign Language Film Oscar nominee. It is part of the official SXSW Narrative Features Festival Favorites Line-up.
| Incendies is about the quest of a brother and sister who travel to their ancestral homeland in the Middle East in search of their mother’s past. They find a woman who is very different from the mother they knew. Adapted from Wajdi Mouawad’s hit play, Incendies is a deeply moving story that brings the extremism of today’s world to a starkly personal level, delivering a powerful and poetic testament to the will to survive. |
