Agrifood

The agrifood sector, which has become a leading-edge industry, makes a major contribution to Québec’s economic growth. Both agriculture, which targets sustainable development, and processing, a sector recognized for its dynamic approach, are oriented decisively towards the future.

Food processing represents 14% of all jobs in the manufacturing sector. It is one of the most important segments of Québec’s economy, alongside the transportation equipment, chemical products and metal processing industries.

A wide range of products are manufactured in Québec, and the list of those that have obtained international recognition continues to grow. Pork, milk-fed veal, fine cheeses, maple syrup products, cranberries and fruit juices are just some of the products that have raised Québec’s profile on world markets.

Québec’s expertise in food and drink processing, and its local products, are known well beyond its borders. Exports grew steadily between 1998 and 2004 (49%). Québec’s most important success on international markets has been the pork industry, whose export shipments more than doubled between 1999 and 2004 to reach $859.3 million.
