Energy

Québec has a territory of 1 667 441 km2, over 3% of the world’s freshwater reserves and 35 000 megawatts of installed generating capacity, making it the main producer of hydroelectricity in North America.

Hydroelectricity is a “natural” choice, and one that has been a decisive factor in Québec’s economic growth. Through the spectacular results obtained in the development of its water resources, Québec has acquired internationally-recognized expertise in the production, transmission and distribution of electric power.

In addition, Québec intends to take advantage of its outstanding wind resources, a source of clean energy whose use is increasing worldwide. Wind generation produces no greenhouse gases and offers a way to meet the objectives of sustainable development and the commitments of the Kyoto Protocol. Hydro-Québec is also looking at other sources of renewable energy such as biomass, geothermal energy and solar generation, and their possible use in the self-generation of electricity.

The quality of the work performed by Québec’s engineers in the fields of hydroelectric generation and natural resource development, as well as the daring solutions they propose, have gained international exposure. Québec firms can provide international customers with know-how, expertise and an innovative approach to the production, transmission and distribution of electricity.
