Information and communication technologies (ICTs)
The information and communication technologies (ICT) sector has experienced exponential growth since the 1990s. By 2001, this industrial sector represented a world market of over US$ 2 400 billion. Internet and mobile phone networks have been the main driving force in the ICT sector in recent years.
In Québec, the 5 000 companies in this sector employ around 128 000 people and generate turnover of $19 billion. Private R&D investment totals $1,1 billion.
Most ICT production in Québec (70%) is exported, mainly to the United States. Québec’s exports represent 35% of the Canadian total in this sector.
