Transportation
The transportation equipment manufacturing industry is a relatively recent development in Québec, but it has already earned a place on international markets. Bombardier, in particular, is a world leader in passenger rail transportation.
The industry has an annual turnover of over $7 billion and almost 35 000 employees, and is one of the largest industrial sectors in Québec. It is divided into two branches: surface transportation and maritime transportation.
The surface transportation industry is large and diversified. From the transformation of raw materials to the delivery of finished products, it is linked to several areas of the economy. Its finished products are highly complex, and include a large number of components and systems destined for four key industries:
- automobiles;
- commercial vehicles;
- special-purpose and recreational vehicles;
- rail vehicles.
The companies in the maritime transportation sector build and repair vessels of five tonnes and above, and offshore exploration and drilling rigs.
