Vocational training programs

Vocational training programs prepare students to work in a skilled trade. The vocational diploma (diplôme d’études professionnelles/DEP) is granted to individuals who complete this main program of studies.

The attestation of vocational specialization (attestation de spécialisation professionnelle/ASP) is granted to individuals who complete training aimed at improving their skills or enabling them to specialize in a given trade. To enrol in a vocational training program, you must already have a DEP or be working in a trade in connection with a program of studies.

Vocational training programs at the secondary-school level are administered by the school boards and are offered in public institutions known as “vocational centres”.

Within Québec’s vocational training system, the Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (Department of Education, Recreation and Sports) issues the following:

  • Vocational diploma (diplôme d’études professionnelles/DEP)
    • 140 programs leading to the DEP
    • Between 600 and 1,800 training hours
    • Program duration: 1-2 years
  • Attestation of vocational specialization (attestation de spécialisation professionnelle/ASP)
    • 25 programs leading to the ASP
    • Program duration: 450 to 1,200 hours

Vocational training programs are tailored to regional economic activities. They are designed in collaboration with employers in order to meet labour market needs.

Most vocational training programs include on-the-job internships. To take part in an internship, you must have a work permit and a social insurance number (SIN).

In recent years, Québec has seen a growing demand for workers in various skilled trades - which is why so much emphasis is placed on vocational training. In Québec, over 75% of persons having completed vocational or technical training find full-time work within a year of graduation.
