Employment and immigration
Québec is home to 7.9 million residents, or nearly a quarter of Canada’s population. It has a population density of 4.74 people per square kilometre. Québec is a largely francophone society, and French is its official language. French is therefore the language of government and the usual, everyday language of work, education, communications, trade, and business.
At home, the majority of the population (83%) speaks French, 10% speaks English, and 6% speaks another language. Over 40% of the population can speak French and English (that figure rises to 53% in the Montréal area). In addition, 13% of the population can speak a third language.
