Drivers' licences
A Class 5 driver’s licence is required to drive a passenger vehicle in Québec; the licence also covers any two-axled road vehicle with a net mass below 4 500 kg. To obtain a Class 5 licence, an applicant must
- be 16 years of age or older;
- obtain written consent from the person having parental authority if aged under 18;
- obtain a learner’s licence after passing the theoretical session of the proficiency examination.
A learner’s licence is valid for 18 months, but the practical session of the proficiency examination may be taken after 12 months.
Driving lessons covering the theoretical and practical components are optional, but offer various advantages. For example, for a person who successfully completes driving lessons at a recognized school, the minimum learning period is reduced by 4 months from 12 to 8 months, meaning that the practical session of the proficiency examination may be taken 8 months after obtaining a learner’s licence. The examination checks the applicant’s ability to perform manoeuvres and apply the Highway Safety Code.
