French Language as a Vehicle of Québec Culture

The French fact is one of the most significant aspects of Québec’s cultural heritage. To help preserve and promote it, the Québec government has created the Office québécois de la langue française (Québec Office of the French language), whose mission is stated in the Charter of the French Language.

The Charter mandates two other organizations to intervene in matters relating to the promotion of French in Québec. The Conseil supérieur de la langue française (Superior Council of the French Language) advises the minister responsible for the implementation of the Charter while the Commission de toponymie (Geographical Names Board) has jurisdiction over place names in Québec. Toponymy also serves as an invaluable record of Québec culture.
