The Government Sustainable Development Strategy 2008-2013

The Government Sustainable Development Strategy 2008-2013 came into effect in January 2008. A key element of the Sustainable Development Act passed in 2006, this Strategy forms the basis for the framework of the government’s sustainable development initiative, which calls for the participation of all government departments and agencies, as well as Québec society.

This sustainable development Strategy outlines the actions to be implemented and objectives to be achieved by the administration. It defines:

  • The vision
  • 3 fundamental issues
    • Develop knowledge
    • Promote responsible action
    • Foster commitment
  • 9 strategic directions and 19 areas of intervention
  • 29 objectives
  • Implementation mecanisms
  • Monitoring measures - mechanisms and means to monitor actions taken and measure progress

A true Collective Commitment, the Strategy reflects the whole range of citizens concerns, setting and living conditions in Québec in order to take into account the differences between rural and urban settings and  the Native communities environment.
The nine strategic directions are:

  • Inform, raise awareness, educate, innovate
  • Reduce and manage risks to improve health, safety and the environment
  • Produce and consume responsibly
  • Increase economic efficiency
  • Address demographic changes
  • Practice integrated, sustainable land use and development
  • Preserve and share the collective heritage
  • Promote social involvement
  • Prevent and reduce social and economic inequality
