Public Security
It falls under government responsibilities to ensure, within its territory, the security and protection of the Québécois and their properties. This protection role is assigned to the ministère de la Sécurité publique who administers the two major activities of security:
- Civil protection in order to respond in emergency situations caused by natural disasters and accidents;
- Police Security to maintain order, protect people and their properties and prevent criminality.
Aside from these two exclusive areas of authority, the Ministry’s other fields of activities cover:
- Fire Safety,
- Provincial Correctional Facilities, and
- Scientific and Medicolegal Expertise Services
The Ministère works in partnership with a wide variety of organisations and agencies including:
- Police Forces;
- Fire Services;
- Municipalities and community-based agencies;
- Sûreté du Québec;
- Bodies under the direction of the ministère de la Sécurité Publique:
- Bureau du coroner;
- Comité de déontologie policière et le Commissaire à la déontologie policière;
- Commission québécoise des libérations conditionnelles;
- École nationale de police du Québec;
- Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux.
